How your baby's growing: Your baby now weighs about three-quarters of a pound and is approximately 10 1/2 inches long. His eyebrows and eyelids are fully developed. And you can certainly feel him move. You may soon feel like he's practicing martial arts as his initial fluttering movements turn into full-fledged kicks and nudges. You may also discover a pattern to his activity as you get to know him better. Some babies are restless in the evening, for example, just as you're trying to fall asleep. Others get busy during the day. He's oblivious to your schedule, though, so don't be surprised if he starts working out just when you're settling down for the night. If you're having a girl, her vagina is formed now, though it will continue to develop until birth.

How your life's changing: You're probably feeling pretty comfortable these days. You're not too big yet, and the usual aches and pains associated with early pregnancy are, for the most part, gone. Relax and enjoy it while you can the third trimester will bring some mild discomfort from carrying a baby who is nearly full-term.

That's not to say you don't have some minor glitches to deal with now. Increased oil production may have given you a mild case of acne, for example. If that's the case, be diligent about washing well with a gentle soap and water twice a day, but don't take any oral acne medications or even use any topical acne products without checking with your practitioner first.

You're also prone to varicose veins now (especially if your mom has them). That's because pregnancy puts added pressure on the veins in your legs. (Your blood volume is increased and your uterus puts pressure on the inferior vena cava, the large vein that returns blood from the lower half of your body to your heart.) As if that's not enough, an increase in the hormone progesterone causes the walls of your blood vessels to relax, so as your baby and uterus grow, the veins can become more and more prominent. Varicose veins tend to worsen with each pregnancy, and while they're most likely to show up in your legs, they can also appear on your vulva.

If your legs ache, put maternity support hose on first thing in the morning. Increasing your circulation with a brisk walk each day can also help, as can elevating your legs and sleeping on your left side with your feet propped up with a pillow.

So this didn't get posted last Tuesday because of computer technicalities (the computer I was using wouldn't allow me to access the website where I get this info). Things are still going well... we got the furniture that we needed from Chicago and cleaned out about 95% of the upstairs at my mom's house. We have a mountain of give-away stuff for the next time we're there (we just ran out of time to get it to the thrift store we give things to) and we threw out about 30 twenty-five gallon trash bags while we were there. And special thanks to the crew of friends who came and helped us load the truck - we really appreciate you! Now we're in the process of unpacking, which is going smoothly, and I hope to have that finished by the end of the week.

While we were in Chicago, Ali and I went to Once Upon a Child in Downers Grove. I've been to one briefly here in Sioux Falls, and they have great deals on used baby and child clothing, gear and toys. While we were there, I bought a couple outfits, a book for me to read, and a really cute bouncy seat that was just about new. And since I'm a bargain shopper, that made me very happy!

Today we had another doctor's appointment. This had to be the fastest appointment that I've ever had. We were in and out in 20 minutes! But everything is measuring right... she said baby (okay belly) is about 22 cm, up from 16 at the last appointment, and right up to my bellybutton as he or she should be. I've gained about 6 pounds in the last 5 weeks (which is slightly more than I had hoped, but I'll chalk that up to a week+ of yummy Chicago food!), and baby's heart rate is still a good, strong 140. And Wags got in a good kick to the fetoscope while she was trying to find a heartbeat! That doesn't surprise me with how active Wags has been... baby already has a pretty regular play schedule =) So, all in all, things are still "perfect."

I hope that while you were in "Chicago" you also had fun and appreciated the baby gifts and party with your family.
