While trying to figure out a "diaper issue" Robert was having (it's all good), I stumbled upon a "Q&A" section on about breastfeeding. Now, I did a lot of reading and asked a lot of questions before Robert was born, so I feel quite confident with how things are going. But I saw the question, "Should I drink orange juice while breastfeeding?"

At first I thought, "What a stupid question, of course you can!" But I read the answer anyway and was quite surprised.

Orange and other citrus fruits are great for a new mom to eat and drink, but they bother many young infants. For the first few months of your baby's life, her intestinal tract is immature and can be sensitive to certain foods, including citrus. If you notice she is unusually fussy or gassy, or is spitting up within a couple of hours of breastfeeding, try avoiding citrus until your baby's intestinal tract is more developed, around 4 months of age.

Well that's something I'd never heard... but the symptoms fit Robert to a T. In fact, they were the reason that I gave up dairy - and I know it can take up to 3 weeks to get all the dairy proteins out of my system, but Robert still seemed so unhappy and uncomfortable when trying to pass gas.

While I was in labor with Robert, I became seriously hooked on orange juice... I think I drank about a gallon and a half if not more during our entire hospital stay. Since being home, I had been drinking at least 8 ounces a day - usually first thing in the morning. This past week I purchase the lots of pulp kind because it was on sale. Looking back now, Robert's painful gas got worse this week.

So for the past couple of days I've gone without OJ... and he's been so much more calm and settled. Whether the milk elimination is finally kicking in or the citrus was the real problem all along (sorry, Florida family!), we won't know for awhile - I don't want to mess around with his health. Either way, I'm just glad he's feeling better.
